I would like to know if anyone has any present-day knowledge of a property called "Beechwood" in Driffield, which was the home at his death of my Grt Grandfather EJ Wilson, who was a Hull solicitor. Regards David |

There is a birth announcement in the Driffield Times July 11th 1885. Newton: At Beechwood, Driffield, July 7th, the wife of Rev the Canon Newton, of a son.
Bulmers Directory 1892: Rev. Horace Newton. MA, Vicar of Great & Little Driffield and Canon of York, Beechwood, Driffield. He's Vicar of All Saints parish Church, Middle Street North, Driffield.
There is a Beechwood Lane off Wasford Road which leads to a big house now called Riverhead Nursing Home, there are other houses down the lane but whether this was 'Beechwood' I don't know. Good luck.

Thanks for the response, having found the road on Google maps, it looks as though the old property may have been demolished and a group of new houses built on the land etc. Thanks David |

Beechwood is not demolished and can be approached from Wansford Road or the lane that runs to Riverhead Hall, the nursing home by the river. I believe Paul Theakston still lives there and has improved the property some what. Before him the Megginsons and the Taylors shared the house. |

I certainly do know of it (although I have never been to it, and am pleased to see it still exists from further posts below!), my Great Great Grandfather built it when he came to be Vicar of Driffield. he was clearly much loved over his 15 years here and very generous
I believe there were one or two calls at the time that it was rather too large a house for a vicar to live in (his later houses got bigger and bigger - the scottish "holiday" house had 28 bedrooms!)!
He had inherited a very large fortune from his father 9sadly all gone!), and used it to rebuild the church, amongst many other large donations at his various parishes.
I have some photos of the house, as well as many newspaper articles on him, and a history. Email me if you would like them
Great news it still exists, I must try to photograph it one day, does anyone have any newer pictures?
Kind Regards Edward

Beechwood is a large 5/6 bedroom semmi, 1 half's entrance on Wansford road the other half from down the same lane as the nursing home have a look on google earth it's in the trees The half on Wansford road is being renovated. I think the houses were build for 2 Brothers who owned a large department store in Hull, what is now the house of Frazer. |
